TL;DR
Nank.ai and Nankai are the same six letters in the same order. Take the dot out of Nank.ai and you have Nankai. Nankai is the Tianjin school our founder graduated from in the 1990s, and we took the name for what it stood for.
- Remove the period and the school’s name comes back whole. The dot turns a name into a domain, and it lands in front of the part we build with.
- Yan Xiu founded Nankai in Tianjin in 1904 and brought in Zhang Boling to run it. It grew into eleven institutions, including Nankai University in 1919.
- The name travelled outward. Nankai District in Tianjin takes its name from the schools, not the other way round.
- What made Nankai radical in 1904 was the curriculum. It taught a western-style college-preparatory course instead of the Confucian classics and the examinations that tested recall of them.
- Its motto turns on two characters, gong and neng. Public spirit and ability. Character without capability was not the goal, and neither was the reverse.
- Two Premiers of the People’s Republic of China graduated from the school. Zhou Enlai left in 1917 as one of two valedictorians. Wen Jiabao followed decades later.
- We have no affiliation with the Nankai schools or Nankai University. The name is a standard we set for ourselves, not a lineage we inherited.

Take out the dot
Nank.ai and Nankai are the same six letters in the same order. The only difference is where we put a dot.
That is the whole of the wordplay, and it does two jobs at once. The period is what turns a name into a domain. It also lands in front of “ai”, which is the part of the work our platform carries. So the name reads as the school our founder came from, or as the technology we build with, depending on where your eye stops.
The rest of this page is about the school.
A school first, then a neighbourhood
Most institutions take their name from the place they sit in. Nankai worked the other way.
Yan Xiu founded the school in Tianjin in 1904. He was a Hanlin Academy scholar who had held posts in China’s provincial and central governments. He brought in a young educator named Zhang Boling to run it. The two of them kept building. Nankai University opened in 1919. A girls’ school followed in 1923, an elementary school in 1928, a sister secondary school in Chongqing in 1936. Eleven institutions now carry the name.
Tianjin has a Nankai District. Wikipedia is direct about which came first: “Nankai District (南开区, Nan-kai Qu) in the city of Tianjin is named after Nankai schools.” The school did not borrow the neighbourhood’s name. The neighbourhood borrowed the school’s.
What we could not source
The English-language sources we checked give no character-level meaning for 南开, and we are not going to invent one. They do settle the direction the name travelled, which is the more interesting fact anyway.
What was radical about 1904
In 1904 Chinese secondary education ran on the Confucian classics and on examinations that tested recall of them. A student’s job was to reproduce the canon. Nankai did something else. Wikipedia describes the school as featuring “a western-style college-preparatory curricula instead of a traditional Confucian curriculum”.
Read past the dry phrasing and the choice is a sharp one. Yan Xiu and Zhang Boling looked at a system that measured students by what they could recite. They decided it was not producing people who could do anything. So they built the opposite.
That is the part we took.
Gong and neng
The school motto turns on two characters. Gong, public spirit. Neng, ability. The pairing is the whole argument. Character without capability helps nobody, and capability without character is worse. Yan Xiu meant the motto as a description of the graduate he wanted:
“leaders with a spirit of integrity, dedication, and civic responsibility who would also have the practical abilities necessary to confront China’s difficulties.”

Note the word “also”. The motto refuses to let you pick one.
Two Premiers, and a long list after them
Zhou Enlai entered Nankai Middle School in 1913. He won awards in the speech club and edited the school newspaper in his final year. He graduated in June 1917 as one of two valedictorians. When Nankai University opened in August 1919 he was in the first class. He went on to serve as the first Premier of the People’s Republic of China, from 1949 until his death in 1976.
Wen Jiabao, Premier from 2003 to 2013, went to the same school. Wikipedia makes the connection explicit: “Wen went to the Nankai High School from which the first premier of the People’s Republic of China Zhou Enlai graduated.”
Two heads of government from one secondary school is the headline. The longer list is the better argument. More than sixty academicians came out of the school. So did the people who went on to run the institutions: Zhou Guangzhao led the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1987 to 1997, Zhu Guangya was the first President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Mei Yiqi was the first President of Tsinghua University. Between 1998 and 2005 four Nankai students won gold at the International Physics Olympiad. A school that produces one famous graduate got lucky. A school that produces scientists at that rate, for a century, is doing something on purpose.
Why a Toronto compliance firm uses the name
Our founder, Hunter Zhu, graduated from Tianjin Nankai High School in the 1990s. That is the direct link, and it is the smaller half of the reason.
The larger half is that a 1904 argument about education turns out to be an argument about compliance.
Most compliance tooling measures organizations the way the imperial examinations measured students. Can you produce the expected artefact. Can you fill the form. Can you show a green checkmark next to a control name. None of those questions asks whether anything works. A company can pass that test and protect nobody, which is the frustration this company was built out of.
Gong and neng is a better test. Public spirit is a compliance posture you can explain in your own words, to an auditor, without opening a vendor dashboard. Ability is a control that works in your environment rather than one that satisfies a workflow. We build ISO 27001 and SOC 2 programmes to be explainable by the people who own them, and we pair every client with a compliance manager whose job is to make sure they can.
The standard, in one line
Understanding beats recall. A checked box is not a working control.
One thing worth stating outright
Nank.ai has no affiliation with Tianjin Nankai High School, Chongqing Nankai Secondary School, Nankai University, or any other institution in the Nankai family. We are not endorsed by them and we do not speak for them. If you searched for Nankai and found a compliance company in Toronto, that is why.
Taking a name from an institution you admire is not the same as inheriting its standing. It sets a bar and invites people to measure you against it. That was the point of choosing it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nank.ai affiliated with Nankai University?
No. Nank.ai has no affiliation with Nankai University, Tianjin Nankai High School, Chongqing Nankai Secondary School or any other Nankai institution. The name reflects where our founder went to school and what that school stands for. Nothing more.
What does Nankai mean?
The English-language sources we checked do not give a character-level etymology for 南开, so we do not state one. What they do establish is that the name belonged to the school before it belonged to the Tianjin district, which took its name from the schools.
Which Nankai school is Nank.ai named after?
Tianjin Nankai High School, founded by Yan Xiu in 1904 and the first of the Nankai schools. Our founder Hunter Zhu graduated from it in the 1990s. The Chongqing sister school, founded by Zhang Boling in 1936, is a separate institution that still operates today.
Which Chinese Premiers went to Nankai?
Two. Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of the People’s Republic of China, entered the school in 1913 and graduated in 1917 as one of two valedictorians. Wen Jiabao, Premier from 2003 to 2013, attended the same school. The alumni list also holds more than sixty academicians, and the first presidents of both the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Tsinghua University.
Why name a compliance company after a school?
Because the school’s founding choice was to stop testing students on recall and start teaching them to reason, and that is the same argument we make about compliance. A control you can explain beats a control you can only point at on a dashboard.
Is it spelled Nank.ai or Nankai?
Both, and they are the same six letters in the same order. Nank.ai is the company, and Nank AI Inc. is the legal entity. Nankai is the school and the wider family of institutions. Take the dot out of one and you get the other.
