SOC 2 Compliance Checklist

83 controls that SOC 2 auditors commonly test, grouped into 13 areas. Tick off each control you have in place, see what evidence an auditor will ask for, and download the checklist as an Excel workbook.

How to use this checklist

  • Tick what is in place. Only tick a control when it runs today and you can show evidence for it.
  • Open "What auditors ask for". Each control lists the evidence auditors usually request, and the Trust Services Criteria it most often supports.
  • Your progress saves in this browser. Nothing is sent to nank.ai. Use the Excel download to share the list with your team.

This is a common control set for a cloud SaaS company, not the AICPA criteria themselves. Your auditor maps your own controls to the criteria, so the mapping shown here can differ from theirs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official SOC 2 checklist?

No. The AICPA sets the Trust Services Criteria, not a fixed list of controls. Each company designs its own controls to meet the criteria. This checklist shows the controls auditors commonly see at cloud SaaS companies, so you can spot gaps early.

Do I need every control on this list?

Not always. The controls you need depend on the criteria in scope, your systems and your risks. A company with no office may not need the office access controls, and a cloud-only company usually inherits data centre controls from its cloud provider.

What does "often inherited from your cloud provider" mean?

Your cloud provider runs the data centre, so its own SOC 2 report covers the physical and environmental controls there. Your auditor relies on that report as a carved-out subservice organization. You still review the provider's report each year, which control VM2 covers.

How long does it take to get these controls in place?

It depends on how many are open today. Many SaaS teams close the gaps in about three months, then run a Type II observation window of three to twelve months before the audit.
